Buenos Aires, December 3 (NA) – Federal Judge Daniel Rafecas ordered on Wednesday the extradition to Brazil of five fugitives who had been convicted by that country's Supreme Court for participating in the attempted coup against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2023. The fugitives had been detained in Argentina and had been convicted by the neighboring country's highest court for participating in the coup attempt that occurred in Brasilia in January 2023, after Lula won the elections. Rafecas made the decision at the end of the oral trial held in Comodoro Py, as reported by the Argentine News Agency from judicial sources. Judge Rafecas's decision affected Joelton Gusmao de Oliveira, Joel Borges Correa, Rodrigo de Freitas Moro, Wellington Firmino, and Ana Paula de Souza, who had been sentenced to prison terms of 13 to 17 years. Lula: Brazil "gave a lesson in democracy" after Bolsonaro's trial concluded. The five had initiated the refugee process in Argentina, but the extradition ordered by Rafecas prevents the process from being completed.
